Without using a calculator, how would you know if a number could be "square rooted" or "cube rooted"?

As a group, discuss and one representative would describe your suggested method(s) in the Comments.

  1. The square root of a number is just the number which when multiplied by itself gives the first number. So 2 is the square root of 4 because 2 * 2 = 4.

Start with the number you want to find the square root of. Let's use 12. There are three steps:

    Guess
    Divide
    Average.
... and then just keep repeating steps 2 and 3.

  2. For both square and cube root, the number square or cube itself get a number which is vice versa.
